Discovering the Hidden Waterfalls of the Ponale Trail – Accessible on Foot

Discover the lesser-known waterfalls of the Ponale trail. Detailed itinerary to reach these hidden oases on Lake Garda.

Have you ever considered that the Ponale Trail, one of the most famous and beautiful trails in Europe and a must-visit for trekking and mountain biking enthusiasts vacationing on Lake Garda, might still hold some undiscovered secrets? Indeed, it hides true gems, small oases of peace that can be reached with easy detours from the main path. We’re talking about the Ponale waterfalls, known to only a few.

A Hike Off the Beaten Path

Starting from Riva del Garda, embark on the famous Ponale Trail and admire the numerous panoramic viewpoints. Just before entering the second tunnel, on the left, you’ll find a path that won’t lead you to waterfalls but to a viewpoint with unique and unparalleled views of Riva del Garda on the Ponale Trail and the lake. From here, you can admire the beauty of Garda from a unique angle.

Returning to the main trail, walk past the Belvedere Ponale Alto bar and cross the bridge, leave the main trail and take the left turn that leads to the Old Ponale Port.

Let the path guide you and follow it until you almost reach the eastern Garda road; just before reaching the state road, you’ll find an opening in the vegetation on the left that will take you to the first waterfall. An oasis of coolness, tranquility, and peace just a stone’s throw from the lake.

Adventure to Discover the Second Ponale Waterfall

If you’re an adventurous hiker, there’s a second, even more suggestive waterfall. Reaching it requires a bit of climbing on a rope, but the effort will be amply rewarded by the beauty of the place.

You’ll find yourself immersed in a spectacle where crystal-clear water, falling among the rocks, creates a relaxing melody that blends with the rustling of the wind. Where sunlight filters through the lush vegetation, creating plays of light and shadow, which when meeting the water creates rainbows of different intensities, making the atmosphere even more magical. A place to get in touch with nature and forget about the hustle and bustle of the modern world. Remember to bring your swimsuit to experience the unique sensation of a “shower” under the waterfall. Beware, the water is very cold.

Useful Tips

  • Hiking boots: essential for tackling the uneven terrain.
  • Water: bring a water bottle to stay hydrated.
  • Camera: to capture the breathtaking views.
  • Attention: the section leading to the second waterfall requires some skill and is not recommended for those who suffer from vertigo.
  • Not a circular route! To return to Riva del Garda, you must return to the Ponale Trail and follow the main path to the town. Walking on the Eastern Garda road is very dangerous.
